Design philosophy

A little bit about my philosophy when it comes to design. My biggest goal with games is immersion, I think that games are best capable of sucking in someone into the world being shown compared to any other form of media. They have the ability to tell the most in depth and immersive stories ever. Mechanics can be such a powerful way to change the feel of a game, from limitations for the player to set up tension to the way combat works making a player feel like a super hero. Level design I feel obviously can elevate immersion for a world from the small things like prop placement or trends like how areas might be more maze like to get players lost and such.

inspiration

Heres some of the media that has inspired me. One key example is star wars and its extended universe. I enjoy going onto sites like wookiepedia and going down rabbit holes on various elements of the universe and seeing that through all the media that has been made for this franchise it has turned that galaxy into something that is lived in by these characters and not just a series of areas for story elements to take place in.

To that end, the world of middle earth is something I take inspiration from with tolkeins level of detail when it comes to building out the world with things like entire languages and histories that are only covered on a surface level in the main line media.

In terms of games that have inspired me I think the Like a Dragon series is honestly something that inspires me. It has this crazy contrast of a serious crime drama set in the japanese underground and then these wacky side stories that see these super serious characters put into rediciouls situations. I think that it’s a great way release tension from players and give them a chance to breathe between the story beats. I also love the environments they set these games in since they actually feel so real, and throughout the games you get to see the passage of time for the city.
